Seeking the Savior

Wise Men: Seeking the Savior

Bible Reading: Matthew 2:1-8

The Visit of the Wise Men

Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.” When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for so it is written by the prophet:

“‘And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
    are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;
for from you shall come a ruler
    who will shepherd my people Israel.’”

Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star had appeared. And he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search diligently for the child, and when you have found him, bring me word, that I too may come and worship him.”

Reading Questions: Where did the seeking Magi come from? (1)  [Although we can’t be certain, the Magi were probably astrologers who studied the stars and were advisors to the King of Persia.] Why did they come to Jerusalem? (2) How did Herod determine where the baby was? (3-5)  What did Herod tell the Magi to do? (8) What can we learn from the Magi? How does the reading relate to Isaiah 55:6-7?

Journal Writing: What is an important truth from the Bible reading? Why do you need to know that truth?

Application Prayer: Write out a prayer for God’s insight and help into how you can apply the truth from the reading.

Week’s Memory Verse:  John 3:19-20.

19This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed.
